It was a very green week for this CSA pickup. The greens on the farm were bolting and they harvested everything that they could for yet another week, and I have to say, I wish some of this stuff had been pulled earlier, as all the greens I have eaten so far have been a lot more bitter than usual, which is unfortunate. However! SO MANY AWESOME CUCUMBERS AND SQUASH! And now I am heart set on making blueberry pie.
Vegetable Share:
2 lb mixed zucchini (green, yellow)
4 pickling Cucumbers and
2 large Asian burpless Cucumber
1 bunch carrots
1 bu arugula
1 bu kale
1 bu rainbow chard
Mesclun lettuce (1 bag for sites w/o scale, .25 lb for sites w/scale)
Parsley (1 bu or .10 lb for sites w/scale)
Fruit share: 3 pints organic blueberries
Flower share: sunflowers, lavender
Egg share: ½ dozen pastured eggs
How beautiful are those flowers with the purple string beans! I had never seen purple string beans before, which is evidently because when you cook them they turn green. (We shall see about that) The purple string beans (And an adorable lemon cucumber) were my thank you for volunteering at the greenmarket farm stand that Garden of Eve Farm runs on Saturdays at McCarren Park.
I mean, look at how fast the green ones went, and then no one wanted the purple ones! Why?! I tasted them both raw, and the purple are a little peppery and so brilliantly colored that when I was told I could take something home, I didn’t even have to think about it. I also built a pretty display of roots and marveled at golden beets, which I have also never had. Probably because I loathe beets.
And to top off an already lovely day, there was a guy giving away baby sunflowers in the park, so I will leave you with this lovely image, which I have titled “Sunflower of the Year”
Be-yoo-teee-fullll! Those purple string beans look gorgeous!
So much purple! I love it 🙂
